About Moose River Plains Wild Forest

Moose River Plains Wild Forest is located in the central Adirondack Park of New York State and covers a sprawling landscape of rugged terrain, wetlands, forested hills, and meandering rivers. The area is characterized by its extensive network of primitive roads and trails, making it highly accessible for a variety of outdoor pursuits including hiking, camping, boating, mountain biking, and snowmobiling in winter. Ecologically, the forest supports mixed hardwoods and conifers as well as rich habitat for wildlife such as moose, black bear, and numerous bird species. The Moose River itself is a focal point, offering excellent fishing opportunities and paddling routes. Historically, the area was once used for logging and has since reverted to a natural state managed to preserve its wilderness character while providing recreation opportunities. Visitors appreciate the sense of remoteness combined with the ease of access that the maintained road system affords. Notable landmarks include numerous scenic overlooks, wetland complexes, and the boundaries adjacent to higher protection areas like the West Canada Lakes Wilderness. The Wild Forest status allows for both motorized and non-motorized uses, making it a popular destination for a broad spectrum of outdoor enthusiasts from families to seasoned backcountry travelers.
